Dodecanese Islands Travel Guide

Island hopping from Rhodes: the complete guide

Rhodes is the largest and most visited island in the Dodecanese, a group of over 160 islands in the southeastern Aegean Sea. The name Dodecanese means "twelve islands" in Greek, though the group actually contains 15 major inhabited islands and dozens of smaller uninhabited islets. Rhodes sits at the crossroads of the Aegean, making it the perfect base for island hopping across the Dodecanese archipelago.

The Dodecanese chain stretches from Patmos in the north to Kastellorizo in the far southeast, close to the Turkish coast. Each island has its own distinct character. Symi is known for its neoclassical architecture and seafood. Kos offers cycling, ancient ruins, and lively nightlife. Kalymnos is the sponge-diving capital of Greece. Nisyros has an active volcanic crater you can walk into. Patmos is a UNESCO-listed holy island. And Tilos has been declared an ecological park.

Ferry services from Rhodes connect to all major Dodecanese islands and beyond. The main operators are Blue Star Ferries (large conventional ferries with cabins for longer routes), Dodekanisos Seaways (fast catamarans for shorter island-hopping routes), and several smaller local operators. Most ferries depart from Kolona port in Rhodes Town, though ferries to Halki depart from Kamiros Skala on the western coast.

The best time for island hopping from Rhodes is May to October, when ferry schedules are at their most frequent and the weather is reliably warm and sunny. July and August are the busiest months, with higher prices and fuller ferries. September and early October offer the best balance of warm weather, calm seas, and fewer crowds. The shoulder months of April and late October have reduced ferry services but much lower prices.
